New Juaben Assembly to tackle poor sanitation

waste 3The New Juaben Municipal Assembly, has directed that people who dump refuse at unauthorised places and litre public places should be arrested and prosecuted as a means to deal with the sanitation menace.

Dr Kwaku Owusu-Acheampong, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who announced this at a session of the assembly in Koforidua, said indiscipline is the cause of the problem and “it is about time the law is permitted to deal with offenders.”

He said the assembly over the years had used several means including communal labour to manage the poor sanitation situation, but to no avail.

Dr Owusu-Acheampong said the assembly had taken delivery of four environmental and sanitation trucks such as cesspit emptier, compactor and two roll-ons and also contracted Zoomlion Ghana, a sanitation management organisation to deliver five refuse containers to be allocated to some communities to manage waste.

It had also tasked the Environmental and Sanitation Directorate to submit proposal for repairs of all refuse containers that are in bad shape in the municipality.

Dr Owusu-Acheampong said the 2013 action plan implementation had captured the construction of lockable stores at the former children’s park, street naming and property numbering system, minor rehabilitation and upgrading of roads and award bursary to brilliant but needy students.

He said the assembly would also ensure that the decentralisation system worked through the strict adherence of the Local Government Act by empowering and resourcing sub structures such as the zonal councils.

Dr Kwaku-Acheampong said the projects were meant to improve people’s access to social amenities and better living standards.

He called on the people to do away with partisanship politics and rather support the assembly to execute its development mandate.
