$200m needed for UHAS infrastructure – Official

Official calls for assistance to build university
Mr Ben Beke, Development Manager, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho, has appealed to influential personalities from the Volta Region to seek funding to help speed up development of a permanent campus for the University at Sokode.

The University’s temporary campus is on the premises of the Volta Regional Hospital Ho with another campus in Hohoe.

Mr Beke estimated that at least 200 million dollars would be needed to provide most of the infrastructure of the University.

He made the call in an interview at the permanent site of the University at Sokode where President John Mahama was expected to cut sod for work on an 18 million-dollar Chinese funded, Basic and Biomedical Sciences School of the University on Saturday.

Mr Beke said The School would consist of a Faculty building, an eight-unit senior staff residence and accommodation for 66 students and is expected to be completed in two years.

Mr Beke said because government was stretched in funding other new public universities, influential people from the region must also scout for funds to complement government’s efforts at developing infrastructure for the University.

The project is being undertaken by China Yanjian Group Limited.

Mr Beke said a process had been initiated to get the Chinese to transfer their expertise to local people describing the Chinese handiwork as “superb” and different from “ours.”

He said the Chinese would be in charge of maintenance for one year before transferring that responsibility to the University’s Directorate of Physical Development.
