New records set at Inter-Schools and Colleges Sports Festival

The 28th Inter-Schools and Colleges Sports Festival has ended at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi with two new records set in athletics.

In the girls’ long jump, Elizabeth Dadzie of host, Ashanti Region, recorded 5.92 metres to smash the 23-year old existing record of 5.82 metres.

The other new record was also set by Barnabas Dompeh of Ashanti, clocking a time of 53:00 seconds in the 400 metres boys’ category to break the existing record, 54:33 seconds set in 2011.

Ashanti, the defending champions, overcame stiff opposition from nine other Regions to retain their title, hauling six gold, one silver and four bronze medals.

The host Region emerged winners in cross-country, table tennis (boys), handball (girls), hockey (girls) and athletics (boys and girls) events.

Greater Accra, took the second spot on the medal table with three gold, three silver and a bronze, while Central placed third by hauling two gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

The biennial Festival is structured to unearth sporting talents for the nation.

Upper West would host the next event in 2015.
