Volta Region believes street naming will boost tourism

elephantsThe Volta Region could become the first choice tourist destination in Ghana after its street naming project.

Torgbui Agbota Detoh, Volta Regional Director of Town and Country Planning, made the prediction in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at an orientation on the Street Naming and Property Addressing Project in Ho on Thursday.

“Tourists to our region will no longer have difficulties in locating sites and communities of interest and this will boost tourism,” he said.

Torgbui Detoh explained that the language barrier encountered by tourists in finding tourism locations would also be over after the completion of the project.

He said though the region abounds in natural and cultural tourist potentials, such facilities were underutilized due to poor location addresses and was hopeful the project would address those challenges.

Torgbui Detoh said the project would help discover more tourism sites and make them accessible to tourists.

Mr Wahabu Zakari, Senior Planning Officer, Kpetoe/Ziope District Assembly was optimistic that the street naming project would see an end to reports of tourists failing to locate Agortime-Kpetoe, a Kente weaving hub in the Volta region and thus help market the Agotime Kente.

He was hopeful the exercise would improve businesses in the area with enhanced service delivery and higher revenue for the assemblies.

As part of the orientation, Mr Baba Jamal, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development presented equipment to the regional office of the Town and Country Planning to set up a Global Information System (GIS) to co-ordinate the project in the region.

He said the project was a “presidential directive” and must be tackled with seriousness by its implementers.

Baba Jamal said it was for that reason that the project was linked to the key performance indicator for Regional Ministers and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, who must ensure that it was executed within the stipulated time-frame.

Mr Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Volta Regional Minister commended the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for the initiative and assured that the projects would be completed before the deadline.

Volta Region is known for its scenic beauty with several tourist attractions.

It has the highest waterfall and the tallest mountain in Ghana, the Wli Waterfall and mountain Afadjato respectively. The region is also noted for its festivals.
