Driver jailed ten years for defilement

prisonAn Accra circuit court on Tuesday handed a 10 year jail term to one Solomon Amakye for defiling a child under the age of 16, contrary to section 101 of Act 29/60.

Amakye was said to have defiled the girl, 13, at Nungua in the Greater Accra Region.

The court, presided over by Mrs Sedina Agbemava, convicted Amakye after investigations found him guilty of the offence. Amakye, however, pleaded not guilty.

Police Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the court that the complainant, Bertha Nyarko, is the mother of the victim, whilst the convict was a taxi driver.

He said on January 11, 2013, the victim closed from her mother’s shop in the night and on her way home, the accused called her and convinced her to accompany him to his sick wife, who was at a prayer camp.

The prosecution said on the way, the convict lured the victim into a nearby kiosk in the bush and forcibly had sex with her.

Police Inspector Atimbire said the victim after the act went home, but did not narrate her ordeal to the mother.

He said the next day the victim was confronted by her uncle and she narrated the incident to him.

He said the complainant reported the accused to the Nungua DOVVSU, where she was given a medical report for the victim to attend hospital.

The prosecution told the court that the convict was arrested and he admitted the offence in his caution statement after being confronted with the police report.
