Ghana’s opposition leader accepts Supreme Court verdict
The 2012 flagbearer of Ghana’s main opposition party the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accepted the verdict announced by the Supreme Court today August 29, 2013. The Court ruled on a petition by the NPP challenging the results of the December 2012 Presidential elections.
Nana Akufo Addo however disagreed with the court’s decision.
Nana Addo and two others challenged the validity of Ghana’s 2012 Presidential polls which was won by President John Dramani Mahama. The petitioners cited irregularities in the votes accorded to Mr Mahama.
However, the nine-member panel of the Supreme Court which began hearing the case since January this year, today unanimously upheld President Mahama’s win in that election.
“Whilst I disagree with the court’s decision, I accept what the court said,” Mr Akufo Addo told supporters of the NPP in Accra after the verdict was announced.
“We shall not be asking for a review of the verdict so we can all move in the interest of the nation,” he said even though “I’m saddened just like our supporters”.
This brings finality to the issue, Akufo Addo added.
