media2Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, Deputy Northern Regional Minister, has appealed to media practitioners to let their reportage reflect the positive attributes of the region to attract investors.

He said “there is a new Northern Region where there is peaceful coexistence among all tribes” adding that the situation should engage the attention of media practitioners instead of painting the region as violent.

Alhaji Fuseini said this at a forum for media practitioners in the region jointly organized by the regional branch of the Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA), the Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA) and the Northern Sector Action on Awareness Center (NORSAAC), both NGOs, with support from STAR-Ghana in Tamale on Tuesday.

The forum was to sensitize media practitioners in the region on the need to uphold professionalism when reporting on the verdict of the Supreme Court to ensure the sustenance of the peace of the region.

It was under the theme: “Towards Responsible and Peaceful Media Reportage on the Supreme Court Verdict.”

Alhaji Fuseini said the region had been recording a lot of positive developments but not much was being heard about them and urged the media to play a lead role in marketing the north to attract investments.

He commended media practitioners in the region for their professionalism despite the challenges and appealed to them to continue to be guided by the ethics of the profession for the common good of all.

Mr Caesar Abagali, Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, said there had been a remarkable improvement in elections reporting and expressed the hope that such a trend would be exhibited on the Supreme Court verdict.

Mr Abagali said there was the need to ensure that media reportage promoted peace and appealed to media practitioners in the region to uphold the ethics of the profession.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mathew Kwadwo Appia-Agyei, Deputy Northern Regional Police Commander, said the service was ready to uphold its constitutional mandate as it had always done to secure the peace of the nation.

ACP Appia-Agyei said the Regional Police Command had deployed additional personnel to some flash points in the region including Yendi and Bimbilla to ensure peace.

Mr Mohammed Awal, Director of NORSAAC, appealed to media practitioners not to inflame passions in their reportage.

Alhaji Abdulai Baba, Board Member of GDCA and Facilitator of the Dagbon Peace Initiative, stressed the importance of peace to development and appealed to media practitioners to let their reportage unite the people.
