GSHRDC holds leadership training for women

The Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre (GSHRDC) has held a three day leadership training for 30 young women in Accra.

The participants, who were all university students, were taken through topics such as factors affecting leadership, role and functions of a leader and personal empowerment and its strategies.

Mrs Elizabeth Akpalu, Executive Director for Advocates of Gender Equity and a resource person at the training programme, said leadership qualities included positive attitude, common sense and combination of intelligence and shrewdness.

She said one’s ability to make deals and negotiation, zeal to achieve results, willingness to take risk and wide experience in many functions are all factors that influence and develop a leader.

She urged the participants to be bold and accept leadership positions anytime the opportunity comes, to help promote development.

A statement by the GSHRDC said the women in leadership project is to ensure that women have increased skills, resources and opportunities to contribute towards the achievements of Millennium Development Goal 3 and the eradication of poverty in Ghana.

It said a mentoring programme would be instituted for selected women to prepare them for leadership positions in future.
