Ghana’s Badminton team leaves for African Championship

BadmintonGhana’s senior Badminton team has left Accra for Mauritius to participate in the All Africa Seniors Badminton Championship from 14-20 August.

A team of five players, with three males made the trip. They are Daniel Sam, Emmanuel Donkor, Abraham Ayittey and the female duo; Stella Amasah and Evelyn Botwe.

Williams Kyei, General Secretary of the Badminton Association of Ghana (BAG) told GNA Sports that the team will compete in the men and women singles and doubles, as well as mixed doubles.

Ghana managed a quarter final berth at the last edition of the continental seniors championship held in Ethiopia in 2011.

Kyei said players from finalists will be selected for the Badminton Confederation of Africa’s (BCA) training program towards the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Ghana will also also participate in the 2013 Yonex Mauritius International Badminton championship, a Badminton World Federation (BWF) sanctioned future series event from 21-24 August.

The nation’s participation would consolidate the implementation of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Schools project dubbed “Shuttle Time” in the country to develop the sport from grassroots with equipment assistance from the BWF.

The delegation will be led by the BAG President, Nestor Galley, who doubles as a Council Member of the BCA , with Frank Shamo and Jacob E. Wilson as coaches.

The team s expected back on Monday, August 26, 2013.
