Former NPP Parliamentary candidate elected new Greater Accra GPRTU Chairman
Mr Robert Sarbah, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate of the Ablekuma Central in the 2008 Elections, has been confirmed as the new Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for another four year term.
The seat became vacant following the appointment of the former Chairman Alhaji Essa Antie Tetteh as Kpone-Katamanso District Chief Executive.
Mr Sarbah had 394 nominations out of 396 representing 99.49 per cent and was declared unopposed because no contestant for the chairmanship position challenged him.
The Vice Chairman’s position was also contested by two members namely Alhaji Iddrisu Tetteh, who had 372 nominations representing 93.94 per cent and Mr Isaac Ahuma Kubi, 24 nominations, representing 6.06 per cent out of 396 votes.
Mr Nantogmah Abdul-Rashid, District Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (EC), declared Iddrisu Tetteh unopposed based on GPRTU constitution, Article 13 sub section (L) on election qualification, which states that: “A nomination shall be valid for election in the union if it is not less than 20 per cent, that is one fifth of the total nominations”.
Mr Sarbah expressed his appreciation to the members for the confidence reposed in him and gave the assurance he would live up to their expectation.
He cautioned that if by the close of next week new lorry fares had not been fix, the union would have no other option than to increase fares nation-wide without further delay.
He expressed regret that there was an increased in fuel in May 31 between two to three per cent and also in July, another increased of one per cent but all attempt by the union to also increased fares had proved futile.
“In spite of increases in other components that goes into the running cost of transport such as cost of vehicles registration, Driver and Vehicle License Authority (DVLA) road worthy, insurance charges, maintenance cost and spare parts and for the sake of the Ghanaian worker and school children, we decided to be law abiding but now we are fed up,” he warned.
He said his address would be incomplete if he kept mute on the carnage on our roads and advised: “we should avoid over speeding, wrongful overtaking, use of mobile phones while driving, drunk driving and lack of proper maintenance of vehicles.
Other national officers, who supervised the election, were Alhaji Yaw Manu, National Chairman, Mr Stephen Okudzato, A.B.Y Flashman, General Secretary and Deputy respectively and Alhaji Essa Tetteh, immediate past chairman.
