Withdraw licenses for traffic offences – GPRTU Official

An official of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on Wednesday suggested that driving licenses of road traffic offenders should be withdrawn while they are made to pay fines at designated banks.

“I have been to Germany and everything done there by the government is put into the hands of the people. The roads there are divided into three. We can also do the same in Ghana, where we will have three lanes,” Mr Charles Kunadu, Vice Chairman for the Kantamanto-Kwahu GPRTU, branch told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Accra.

Mr Kunadu also called on the authorities to maintain road tracks, by spraying it periodically to guide drivers to stay in the right lane.

A tour of some lorry stations in Accra by GNA revealed that the stations are choked with dilapidated structures dotted around serving as chop bars and drinking bars.

At the Tudu station in Accra, GNA observed that due to the congestion passengers, vendors and traders compete for space with vehicle drivers.

Mr Robinson Ganyoh, a driver, said in spite of the congestion they pay GH¢2.00 to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

Drivers at the Neoplan station near Kwame Nkrumah Circle complained about the bad nature of a portion of the Accra-Kumasi highway, which prolongs the trip from Accra to Kumasi.

The drivers appealed to the government to fix the road for the safety of passengers.

Mr Joseph Atta Kumi, a driver, said portions of the road are very bad but some passengers at times put pressure on drivers to speed up, which contributes to accident.

“I will plead with the government to repair the potholes on our roads,” Mr Kwabena Yeboah, a driver, said.
