The National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) is to set up a Music Recording Department to make way for awarding a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Production.

The B.A in Music Production aims at preparing and equipping students to become highly skilled producers of musical and audio artefacts,

A statement signed by Professor Linus Abraham, Rector of NAFTI, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday said the B.A. programme also aimed at equipping students with the academic and practical skills to develop their individual talents.

The statement said NAFTI would collaborate with the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) to ensure that the programme was designed to equip musicians and composers with music production skills that are essential for success in today’s modern marketplace.

Courses to be offered include Music Theory, Music and Sound Engineering, Composition and Performance, and African music and performance.

The statement indicated that the Department was being developed in collaboration with MUSIGA to ensure that it corresponds to the needs of the Ghanaian music industry.

Prof. Abraham urged MUSIGA to support the initiative and also work towards the standardization of the requisite skills for all levels and aspects of the Industry, the statement added.

It also cited Mr. Bice Osei Kuffour, MUSIGA President as having pledged the Union’s commitment to the idea “to fill a void in professional training of musicians that has long existed in the Industry”.

Meanwhile, a Committee comprising representatives from NAFTI and MUSIGA has been set up under the chairmanship of Professor John Collins, a patron of MUSIGA and lecturer at the University of Ghana’s School of Performing Arts, to craft the road map towards the establishment of the Department.
