Gov’t funds media centre in Ashanti Region

media2Mr Eric Opoku, Ashanti Regional Minister, has performed the ceremony to mark the beginning of construction work on a GH¢583,299.00 Resource Centre for the regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

The two-storey building expected to be ready in six months, would have a 200-capacity conference room, five offices, kitchen, canteen and washrooms.

Government is funding the project which is meant to serve as a convergence point for information gathering, research and a meeting place for journalists in the region and their colleagues in other parts of the country.

Mr Opoku said solving office and accommodation concerns are some of the many interventions government is considering to help alleviate the constraints journalists face in the performance of their duties.

He said the media as an indispensable partner in our development needs to be sufficiently resourced to operate efficiently.

He reminded journalists to uphold the ethics of their profession and work to protect the unity and stability of the nation.

Mr Kojo Bonsu, Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, said the Centre would not only assist journalists in news gathering and dissemination but serve as a place to update their skills and competencies.

Mr Listowel Yesubugarson, Regional Chairman of the GJA, said he was happy government had responded to the appeal by the regional association.

He said the Centre would help bring members together to deliberate on their work and discuss solutions to challenges they encounter in the performance their duties.
