Man, 20 years, jailed 18 years for defilement

jailA 20-year old labourer, Prince Kofi Asare was on Thursday sentenced to 18 years imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast for defiling a ten year old girl.

Asare who lives at Asikafoambantem, a suburb of Twifo Praso, pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea.

Chief Inspector Charles Anku, the prosecutor, had earlier told the court, presided over by Mrs. Eva Bannerman-Williams that on Friday, April 19, this year, at about 20:00 hours, Asare went to the girl’s house to buy a locally produced soft drink (sobolo) from her stepmother.

He said the girl went to their room for the drink but when she returned, Asare had left and so decided to follow up to his (Asare) house to deliver the drink, which costs 30 pesewas, to him.

Chief Anku said Asare gave the girl 50 pesewas and asked her to him a mosquito coil with the change, but when she returned from the errand, he locked her up in his room and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

After the act, he warned the girl not to disclose it to anyone but the victim told her father about her ordeal immediately she got home and the father made a report to the police.

A medical report of the victim indicated that her hymen had been broken and Asare was charged with the offence after investigation, the prosecutor added.
