Ghana PoliceAn unidentified armed robber was on Friday gunned down by the Ashanti Regional Police Highway Patrol Team in a shoot-out at Pasuro near Adankwame in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region.

The deceased and his accomplices, now at large, were said to have opened fire on the police as they were being pursued, forcing the patrol team to return fire.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mohammed Yusif Tanko, in-charge of the Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, told newsmen in Kumasi that, at about 0530 hours the suspects on board a Toyota Corolla taxi approached a checkpoint at Tweapease, an area noted for highway robberies.

The armed robbers allegedly refused to stop when the police signalled them and as a result were given a chase by the patrol team.

ASP Tanko said when the robbers noticed that the police were catching up with them, they opened fire, compelling the police to respond, leading to the  death of the deceased.

The other suspects were said to have managed to escape, leaving their dead colleague in the abandoned vehicle.

The police searched the impounded vehicle and retrieved a locally-manufactured pistol, three empty cartridges, electrical cables, two pairs of pliers and a pinch bar.
