Kotoko receives Ghana premiership trophy

KotokoAsante Kotoko were on Sunday crowned champions for the 2012/2013 Glo-Premier League season after trouncing Ashgold 3-0 in a coronation match at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

It was all joy as the Porcupine Warriors went into wild jubilation as captain Ohene Brenyah was presented with the trophy and players received their medals.

Kotoko amassed a total of 56 points in the just-ended league, bringing their title haul to 22.

Clad in their traditional red jerseys, the team paraded the trophy round the Stadium to the delight of their teeming supporters in appreciation for successful league defence.

The first half saw a determined Ashgold side bombarding the goal area of the homers with some swift inter-positional passes and defence-splitting moves, only to prove wasteful upfront.

Kotoko came into the second half a transformed side, and before Ashgold could settle midfielder, Issah Yakubu, fetched the first goal in 49 minutes.

Having broken the deadlock, the Porcupine Warriors developed the penchant for more goals which arrived when in-form striker Seidu Bancey scored the second goal three minutes on.

Ashgold came into the picture thereon, seizing the midfield and nearly reduced the goal tally in the 60th minute but Aaron Amoah’s volley from an Alhaji Sani in-swinger missed the target narrowly.

The visitors, came close to scoring three minutes later, however, Yusif Karim was an apology of himself as he ballooned the ball over the crossbar with only goalkeeper Soulama Abdoulaye to beat in a counter-attack.

Bancey sealed the doom of the visitors on the stroke of time, netting from Richard Mpong’s cross.
