Transport unions urged to monitor drivers

trotroDeputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Joseph Owusu Nkoranza Municipal Police Commander has appealed to executives of transport unions to monitor activities of long distance drivers before they embark on their journeys.

In addition, he said, they should ensure their vehicles were in better condition.

DSP Owusu made the appeal when he ordered a driver to abandon a trip after knocking down a six-year-old girl, Jessica Boahemaa at Nkoranza.

The staff and pupils of New Paradise International School at Anloga-Sobolo, a suburb of Kumasi, were travelling to the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary in the Nkoranza North District when their Youtong bus knocked down the girl.

Jessica, a Kindergarten pupil of Nkoranza Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Primary School has been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, after treatment at the Nkoranza Saint Theresa’s Catholic Hospital.

She was walking along the road to school when the incident happened.

DSP Owusu ordered that the vehicle should be inspected by officials of the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) at Techiman after which the driver, Seidu Hudu, would be granted bail following an appeal from the executives of Nkoranza Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

He said the Police would continue with investigations pending the health of Jessica before initiating the prosecution of Hudu.
