Tema Metro Assembly rids Community One market of mice

market1The Tema Metropolitan Assembly in partnership with the Tema Zonal office of waste management experts Zoomlion Ghana, have embarked on a sanitation campaign to rid the Tema Community One market of rodents especially mice.

The mice infestation in the market has served as an albatross on the necks of the authorities as the traders kept mounting pressure on them to disinfest the place.

Mr Kempes OfosuWare, Metropolitan Chief Executive said the mice have been linked to a number of fire outbreaks in various markets as they chew on electric cables exposing live wires, which poses threat to life.

He said the mice also feed on the wares of the market women, leading to financial losses, hence the decision for the fumigation exercise.

“It is incumbent upon the assembly to clean the market and our concern is not only on security but also to ensure that the market women operate in a hygienic environment,” he said.

Mr Edward Anirinka, Environmental Officer at the Assembly in charge of the Central Business District, explained that mice in the market pose many dangers to not only the traders but consumers as well.

Mr George Aguadze, Zonal Manager of zoomlion Ghana said the mice were baited with poisoned food and as a result a great number of them have been eliminated.

“This exercise will be carried out across the country in order to bring mice infestations in our markets to the barest minimum,” he said.

The traders expressed gratitude to the authorities for the exercise and appealed that similar attention be paid to the drainage and sewer system in the market.
