President Mahama directs two Ministries to mobilise funds for road works

MCC roadPresident John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday directed the Finance and Roads and Highways ministries to mobilize funds for road contractors to complete some priority roads across the country.

He said much as government was committed to making more roads motorable throughout the country, there were no adequate resources to cater for them at the same time.

President Mahama gave this directive when he inspected some major roads under construction in the eastern part of Accra.

The roads include the reconstruction of a 5.7 kilometre Giffard road stretching from the 37 Military Hospital to the La Palm Royal Hotel, construction of the 3.7 kilometre Burma Camp phase one and 4.3 kilometre Burma Camp phase two roads.

The projects, which commenced in November last year, are expected to be completed in March 2014.

The projects are aimed at providing alternative roads and to decongest the roads linking Teshie, Nungua and the Spintex Road and facilitate movement in the Accra Metropolis and other suburbs.

President Mahama said road construction was pivotal in national development and his administration would work around the clock to serve all communities to open up the country for investment and other economic developments.

Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Minister of Roads and Highways, said most of the projects were plagued with consultancy packaging as the local people were often left out during the engineering levels.

He, therefore, appealed for the inclusion of local consultants since they were more conversant with rules and regulations of the country.
