Accra schools named after Obama, Saudi Prince

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has honoured President Barack Obama and Prince Al Waleed Abdul Aziz of the United States of America and Saudi Arabia respectively.

President Obama was named after a new block of the Salvation Army Cluster of Schools, and Prince Abdul Aziz, Nima Highway School, towards the development of social and economic infrastructure in the Accra through the provision of funds to support the Assembly.

Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuiji, Metropolitan Chief Executive, who made this known after he had been re-elected by assembly members of the AMA, said “it is prudent to recognize the immeasurable contributions of His Royal Highness and the US President” to Ghana.

The Mayor said the US government provided $2.7 million for the construction of four millennium schools in Accra, the Accra Sewer and Drainage reconstruction project, promotion of community upgrading and local governance through exchange of programmes.

He said Prince Aziz also provided $300,000 towards the development of some social interventions as well as the Islamic basic schools from nursery to Junior High School levels in Accra.

On the election supervised by Mr Alexander Poku-Akubia, Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, the Accra Mayor polled 107 out of a total vote of 112.

The assembly members also elected Mr Addo Biney as the Presiding Member, who polled 105 out of 112 votes.

In a related development, the assemblyman for Avenor, Mr Mamoud Haruna in the Accra Metropolitan Area, expressed regret that due to litigations between two families, a six-classroom block contract had been withdrawn.

He said the children living in the community had to walk kilometers away to attend school at the National Police Training School yard at Alajo and Adabraka, putting their lives in danger when crossing the streets and appealed to the AMA to rescind the decision to rearward the contract for the school project.
