Dr Callistus Mahama, Head of Local Government Service (LGS) has announced that government has cancelled appointments on contract within the formal sector.

This means that any employee in the sector who attains 60 years would go on compulsory retirement.

Dr Mahama announced this when interacting with management and staff of Sunyani Municipal Assembly, Asutifi North and Asutifi South District Assemblies.

It was part of his two-day familiarisation visit to some assemblies in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

Dr Mahama said government is poised to ensure that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are well equipped with the needed human resource base in all the 22 decentralised departments and agencies.

He explained that LGS had established Human Resource Department and other units in the assemblies to enable the local communities  to contribute directly and benefit from development projects.

Dr Mahama explained that the MMDAs were established to provide the local people the opportunity to contribute to community development.

He said LGS had rolled out training programmes and refresher courses to adequately prepare and equip staff of the assemblies.

Under Legislative Instrument 1961, Municipal Assemblies are made up of 13 departments and the District Assemblies 11 to make the decentralisation concept meaningful to the local people.

Mr Gado Musah, Asutifi South District Coordinating Director said as a newly created district, it is faced with challenges including accommodation, human resource and infrastructure development.

He appealed to government to release its share of the District Assembly Common Fund on time to provide the social needs of the local people.

Mr Kwasi Oppong-Ababio, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, noted that capacity building for staff is central hence the need for the LGS to organise periodic in-service training for the personnel  to sharpen their skills.

He said the assembly is working assiduously to eliminate poverty and improve on the standard of living of the people.

“This is exemplified by the assembly’s qualification for the District Development Fund  and the Urban Development Grants for 2009, 2010 and 2012,” he said.
