Ghana government plans more credit facilities for SMEs
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that his administration would work around the clock to create a congenial atmosphere for businesses by making credit facilities available to Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs).
He said much emphasis would also be placed on technical and vocational education to train more middle-level human resource to create jobs for themselves and unemployed teeming youth across the country.
President Mahama gave this indication when former German President Horst Koehler called on him at the Flagstaff House, Kanda on Monday.
The former German President is in the country to preside over a special meeting that would harness job creation and forge a link between Europe and African countries in the coming years.
The President said the partnership meeting in the country was timely and critical considering the fact that Ghana had carried out educational reforms that would now turn-out graduates faster than before coupled with the high population growth in the country.
President Mahama said the current growth system relied on vocational and technical education that would produce artisans to become self-employed and reduce the over-reliance on the government sector.
On businesses, President Mahama noted that most enterprises failed in the past because of poor entrepreneurial skills, and the unwillingness of the business community to employ the services of professionals to handle their businesses.
He promised to step up education on the training of more people in entrepreneurial skills that would enable them to create more jobs for the growing youth in the country.
President Mahama said government would also seek partnership with the private sector to create an atmosphere that would provide loans and other facilities to SMEs to progress in their areas of operations.
Former President Koehler said Ghana had the potential to become self-reliant in the near future and that was the reason why he was in the country with his team to leverage those potentials to an international level.
He said the meeting would be concentrated on job creation for the youth as that was paramount for every development country to achieve its development goals.
