Cocoa rehabilitation takes off in Volta Region

cocoa-treeThe Cocoa Rehabilitation Project has taken off in three districts of the Volta Region.

The districts are Kadjebi, Nkwanta and Biakoye.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the Cocoa Farmers Annual Meeting at Kwamekrom, in the Biakoye district, Mr Awudu Yahaya, Agricultural Technical Officer (TO) said the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Viral Control Unit of the Cocoa Board had been cutting diseased trees and aiding farmers to replant.

He said the challenge facing the project was availability of funds to support farmers to cater for labour cost.

Mr Yahaya said there was also some difficulty in winning the cooperation of some farmers in the diseased tree cutting process.

The meeting elected Mr Solomon Mensah, 56, unanimously as Chief Farmer for the Kwamekrom Produce Buying Agency Society.

He heads a five-member new executive.

The outgoing executive had been in office for the past decade.
