AU Members asked to ratify African Charter on public service
Dr Aisha Laraba Abdullahi, Commissioner for Political Affairs of the African Union (AU) Commission, has called on member states to ratify the African Charter on the Values and Principles of Public Service and Administration (PSA).
The Commissioner observed that the implementation of the Charter could give power to public service officials to effectively implement policies to help make the lives of people better.
“I wish to call on member states, which have already signed but not yet ratified this charter to do so without further delay so that we can focus on and direct our energy towards its implementation,” said Dr Abdullahi.
The Commissioner made the call at the opening ceremony of the 4th edition of the African Public Service Day Continental celebration in Accra on Monday.
The week-long commemoration is on the theme: “Africa Public Service in the age of open government: giving voice to citizens.”
Dr Abdullahi said member states needed to demonstrate commitment to the values and principles in the charter, to help transform public services into effective, efficient and innovative ones.
She noted that 26 out 54 members have signed the charter while six have duly finalised the ratification process.
Dr Abdullahi said the charter was a continental legal instrument, which is a common tool for transforming and modernising PSA expected to build capable developmental states.
The Commissioner said there would not be African renaissance without having in mind Africa economic reconstruction and growth, which was dependent on effective, efficient and innovative PSA.
The AU formally adopted June 23 each year to commemorate public service day.
