China says 1000 nationals return home after Ghana mining crackdown

Made in ChinaAbout 1,072 Chinese nationals have returned home following a crackdown on illegal gold mining activities by Ghanaian authorities.

They returned to their homes in Shanglin County of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the county government said Thursday night, the Xinhua news agency reported June 14, 2013.

Their trip was said to have been assisted by a team from the Guangxi Zhuang Region together with the Chinese Embassy in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

The Ghana government recently undertook a crackdown on illegal mining. In early June, 169 Chinese workers were reportedly arrested by Ghanaian authorities for engaging in illegal mining.

After consultations between officials of the two countries, the Chinese detainees were released, according to the Chinese state media.
