Krobo Nursing Training School admits first batch of students

NursesThe Krobo Community Health Nursing Training School in the Techiman North District, has admitted its first batch of 182 students, made up of 40 boys and 142 girls.

Mrs Georgina Sam, Brong-Ahafo Regional Officer of Nurses and Midwives Council, who administered the Matriculation Oath called for an appropriate planning, production and management of human resources for the health sector to ensure that the citizenry get access to quality health care.

She said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in 2002, implemented a policy on the rationale for the production of health workers, by increasing the intake of students in health training institutions and not undermining quality.

“The policy was to scale up the dwindling health work force due to the brain-drain as a result of poor conditions of service for health workers in the 1990s,” Mrs Sam added.

Mr Alex Kofi Kyeremeh, Deputy Minister of Education, through whose efforts the school was established appealed to the pioneer students to eschew negative tendencies that would affect their performance.

He announced that a classroom block would be built for the school and commended the chiefs and people of Krobo for releasing land to establish the academic facility.

Mr Christopher Beyere, Head of Nursing Training Institutes, said the MOH is making efforts to make education in the health sector affordable to all and sundry.

He pledged that MOH would provide the school with a pick-up vehicle and made a personal promise to donate 50 copies of books on nursing and other health materials to the school.

He said he would also motivate the tutors with special packages to make teaching and learning attractive.

Mrs Rachael Baiden, Principal, said the school was established to train and produce competent auxiliary nurses.

She said some of the challenges facing the school are lack of potable water, transport facilities, books and poor infrastructure and storage resources.

Mr Barimah Okra, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the school commended the Krobohene who is also the Kyidomhene of Techiman Traditional Area for releasing 20 acres of land for the school’s new site.

Nana Opoku Fosu Gyeabour 11, Koasehene and Manwerehene of Techiman Traditional Area expressed appreciation to the stakeholders for establishing the school.

He asked the students to be role models and to be disciplined in order to leave a legacy for the school’s development.
