GRA to descend on tax defaulters in Brong-Ahafo

TaxationThe Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD) of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in Sunyani is to embark on an operation against tax defaulters in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

Mr Peter Danso Kyeremateng, Head of the Sunyani Small Tax Office (STO) told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Tuesday that the idea behind the distress action is to seize assets of tax defaulters to optimise domestic tax revenue.

He explained that Value Added Tax (VAT) and Internal Revenue Service  constitutes the DTRD, which  deals with both direct and indirect domestic taxes while  Custom Division of the GRA deals with international taxes.

He pointed out that as part of the GRA’s integration and modernisation programme, the DTRD had been segmented into a large tax payer office based only in Accra and 15 Medium Tax Payer Offices (MTOs) spread nationwide.

Mr Kyeremateng said the MTO located in Sunyani covers the o Region while four STO’s are located at Sunyani, Techiman, Berekum and Goaso.

He said the rationale behind the integration and modernisation was to deal with tax payers in a holistic manner to ensure better customer service delivery, reduce tax compliance cost and a single source for tax inquiries.

It would also improve quality of customer records, create a common source for tax procedures as well as improve business processes backed by information, communication technology .

Mr Kyeremateng said to facilitate operations in the Region, the VAT Regional Office had been relocated at the GRA building, opposite the Ghana Highway Authority, housing both the Sunyani MTO and STO.
