Ashanti REGSEC won’t tolerate excesses – Deputy Minister

Ghana PoliceThe Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), has warned that it would deal with unscrupulous persons, taking undue advantage of the ongoing exercise to flush out illegal miners to both harass and destroy their equipment.

It has accordingly asked individuals and group of persons, who have suffered any such unwarranted attacks to report the identities of the perpetrators and the vehicles used to the Regional Police Commander or the nearest police station for action to be taken.

A statement signed by Mr. Samuel Adusei, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, a copy of which was made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said  the REGSEC has learnt that some miscreants are extorting monies and burning equipment such as excavators, mobile phones and other things belonging to the miners.

The statement assured all law-abiding citizens and foreigners doing legitimate business in the region to go about their duties without fear or panic.

The exercise initiated in collaboration with a Presidential Task Force started on Saturday, June1, 2013, and aims at stopping illegal mining by both Ghanaian nationals and foreigners in keeping with the country’s law on mining.
