Teenage girls in Brong Ahafo are sexually promiscuous – NGO

prostitutionMrs Cecelia Senyo, Executive Director of Hope For Future Generation (HFFG), a non-governmental organization (NGO), on Wednesday expressed shock at the alarming rate of sexual promiscuity among teenage girls in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

She said a research by the NGO indicated that a high percentage of girls between 14 and 16 years had multiple sex partners.

Mrs Senyo made the remark at a workshop organized by the NGO for Community based Organisations (CBOs), NGOs and queen mothers drawn from the Region, at Fiapre, in the Sunyani West District.

It was dubbed: “Strengthening HIV and AIDS Response Partnerships with Evidence based Results Project.

Mrs Senyo said the NGO had targeted teenage sex workers in the Jaman North, Jaman South, Kintampo North, Berekum, Dormaa, Kintampo South, Nkoranza North, Techiman and Sunyani areas.

Mrs Senyo said some girls had contracted sexually transmitted infections because they lacked sex education and engaged in unprotected sex.

Mr Emmanuel Obeng-Hinneh, Brong-Ahafo Regional TB/HIV Coordinator, said that in 2008, 662 cases of TB were detected in the region, 873 in 2009, 859 in 2010, 1,036 in 2011 and 1,046 in 2012.

He said TB treatment in the region was 80 per cent while the TB death rate was 13 per cent.

Mr Obeng-Hinneh condemned the stigmatization of TB patients and advised the patients to go to government hospitals to obtain TB drugs free of charge.
