Ghana to award players in tourism industry

Mr Alexander Kwame Nketia, Acting Northern Regional Manager of Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) on Tuesday said the authority would continue with its National Tourism Awards (NTA).

He said the NTA is determined to award recognise people in the tourism industry.

Mr Nketia was speaking in Tamale during the media launch of the 2013 National Tourism Awards, which is slated for December 13.

Throwing more light on the awards, he said the venue for the NTA would keep changing from region to region and that another objective of the NTA is to encourage competition among players in the tourism industry.

The programme, which was on the theme: “Tourism: Gaining a competitive edge through innovation and service excellence,” was aimed at creating awareness of the NTAs in the Northern Region.

The programme was attended by members of the GTA and managers of hotels and restaurants.

Mr Sampson Donkoh Deputy Chief Executive of the GTA said since 2008, the awards had been put on hold due to technical and financial problems.

He said the NTA was organised to boost the tourism industry and to reward industries and individuals who contributed to the development of the industry.

Alhaji Abdulai Haruna Friday, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive who deputised for the Northern Regional Minister indicated that tourism is the fourth exchange earner of the country and urged all players in the industry to find new and innovative ways of equipping their staff to boost the sector.

Alhaji Friday who launched the awards observed that the local people in the tourism industry are promoting good services and entreated all participants at the function to work hard to move the Region forward.
