Nana Oye Lithur, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, has urged local government assemblies and traditional authorities to report the existence of brothels to the Police.

“Their activities are even more unfortunate when they involve under-age girls,” the Minister stated on Tuesday when she inspected two demolished brothels located within Tema New Town in the Greater Accra Region.

The Minister, who ordered the demolition of the two brothels, said it was unfortunate that such places lured not only adult women but also girls, who were far below the age of consent, to practice prostitution.

A third brothel known as “Mama Africa” was also ordered to be demolished.

She urged authorities within the area to keep looking out for such activities in order to prevent them.

Nana Oye Lithur said the Ministry would send the girls, who worked within such brothels, to the Department of Social Welfare and have them rehabilitated.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ali Seidu, Police Commander of Tema New Town, assured the Minister that the Police would enforce the laws on prostitution and brothels within the area.

He said the third brothel would be demolished within a month.
