University of Health to introduce Masters’ Programme in Disaster Management
University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho, is to introduce a Masters’ Programme in Disaster Management next academic year.
The programme is to train students in disaster management and safety, Dr Ishmael Norman, Director of Strengthened Leadership in Disaster Resilience, said in an interaction with the media on Friday.
University of Development Studies (UDS) is the only university running a similar programme currently in Ghana.
The development of the programme for UHAS was sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank.
Dr Norman said the training of disaster professionals would help the country to save some $70 million spent on disaster management annually.
He said it was unfortunate that the country was not taking disaster and emergency issues seriously, resulting in shifting of blame anytime there was a disaster.
Dr Norman said it was also regrettable that public and private institutions in the country lacked safety professionals and expressed the hope that the programme would help fix the anomaly.
“It is very bad that we continue to train doctors, engineers and other professionals but not disaster and safety professionals. The trend must change so that we are disaster resilient,” he said.
Ms Deborah Elzie, Programme Director, Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy of Tulane University, said it was important for countries to be prepared for disasters at all times.

POOR CITY PLANNING, POOR DRAINAGE, LEADERSHIP, POOR BUILDING CODE, HOW TO AVOID DESASTER IS TO BUILD THE CITY VERY WELL AND IF WATER CANNOT GET NOWHERE TO GO IT FLOODS AND HOW TO AVOID FLOOD IN THE CITIES, TOWNS IS PROPER DRAINAGE SYSTEM, PROPER BUILDING CODE AND PROPER MATERIALS REQUIRED, INSPECTORS FOR ALL MATERIALS, ELECTRICALS DURING CONSTRUCTION, PURE AND SIMPLE. STUPID LEADERS!!!
