Rockefeller Foundation initiates $100m project to create digital jobs in Ghana, other countries

ICT_InternetYouth from six African countries including Ghana stand to benefit from a new $100 million digitally-focused job creation project launched by the Rockefeller Foundation.

The Foundation says, Digital Jobs Africa, announced May 9, 2013, will unfold over the next seven years with the goal of impacting the lives of one million people through job creation for high-potential but disadvantaged youth in the six African countries – Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa.

It indicated that the six countries have dynamic and growing services sectors and offer the potential for continued ICT development.

“Our goals, ultimately, are to create a flourishing ecosystem for digital jobs – and see that income-generating opportunities create a multiplier effect on well-being within workers’ households and communities,” the Foundation said in a statement.

Rockefeller says it will leverage significant funds and support from other stakeholders for the nearly $100 million budgeted initiative.

“The Foundation’s partnerships and collaborations with the private sector, development organizations, civil society organizations and governments will be a critical success factor in achieving the impact goal,” it said.

The Foundation also pledged to work with local organizations to provide demand-led skills training that will prepare young people for digital jobs.
