West African countries must tackle climate change – Chair of GWP West Africa

climate-changeWest African countries must tackle the issue of climate change as it has the potential to hinder access to water resources in the sub-region, Mr Hama Arba Diallo, Chair of the Global Water Partnership West Africa(GWP/WA) warned on Tuesday.

Speaking at the 5th Assembly of Partners of Global Water Partnership West Africa in Accra, Mr Diallo called for an international cooperation to deal with the threats posed by climate change.

“Climate Change is a serious challenge as it can affect the sources of water for drinking, agriculture and for all other uses,” he said.

Mr Diallo said in the West African sub-region, there was a concern about the weak governance structures and poorly designed infrastructures in the management of water resources.

“No country can on its own survive the major challenges posed by climate change. We have come together knowing this,” he said.

Mr Diallo said the sub-region had made some progress but individual organisations responsible for the management of water resources needed to coordinate their actions to be able to serve the populations of the region.

The objectives for the GWP/WA’s Partners Meeting include the exchange and discussion on the 2014-2019 GWP strategy and provision of guidance on the 2014-2016 work plan for West Africa.

It would also share with partners ongoing initiatives in the region and discuss the best strategies to maximize profit for countries.
