Ghanaian workers must know their pension rights and responsibilities – Coalition

Oil_mine workersThe Coalition on the Right to Information (RTI) on Thursday said there was the need for all workers to be well informed on their pension rights and responsibilities in order to hold their employers including the government accountable.

This was contained in a press release issued by the coalition in Sekondi to mark this year’s May Day celebration, which was under the theme “Pensions: It is your Right and Responsibility.”

The release, signed by Madam Gina Mensah, the National Coordinator of the Coalition, said this would not only enlighten workers but also promote the country’s democracy and development.

It said for Ghana to reach its development heights, it needed to transform into a knowledge- based society, and that, this could only be achieved with the existence of an effective Right to Information Law.

“The Coalition believes that the passage and implementation of an effective Right to Information Law would positively affect all aspects of the individual’s life including worker’s pension”, the release said.

It urged Cabinet to expedite action on the process towards the passage of the law by presenting it before Parliament.

“The Coalition is, therefore, calling on government to “Walk the Talk” and organized labour and workers in general to add their voices to call for the amendment and passage of the Right to Information Bill into law”, the release added.
