Sekondi-Takoradi to be transformed into industrial hub – GEA
The Western Region branch of the Ghana Employers Association (GEA), on Thursday said that it would initiate measures to transform Sekondi-Takoradi oil city into an industrial hub of the country.
It, therefore, called on members to come out with strategies towards the achievement of the objective.
Mr Joseph Bawuah, Regional Advisory Committee chairman of the GEA, who gave the assurance at a meeting in Takoradi, said the oil find in the region had been blown out of proportion thus bringing hardship to the people as landlords and landladies eject tenants to convert their houses into offices and churches to the disadvantage of workers.
The meeting provided a platform for the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of businesses in the region to suggest ways of overcoming challenges they encounter in their economic activities.
They mentioned energy crisis, water shortage, difficulties in land acquisition, high interest rate, influx of sub-standard goods on the Ghanaian market, illegal mining resulting in the pollution of water bodies and the deplorable road network as some of the problems.
Mr Alex Frimpong, CEO of the GEA, called on the authorities to create favourable conditions at Sekondi-Takoradi since it was strategically positioned for the establishment of businesses and industries.
He called for the revival of collapsed industries and companies, to create more jobs for the people.
Mr Frimpong appealed to GEA members to work with government to find solutions to the problems to ensure sustainability of their economic establishments.
Mr Ebenezer Teye Addo, Western Regional Minister, said government was determined to support the private sector to ensure economic growth.
He said government was addressing problems regarding the power plant at Aboaze and the Gas project at Atuabo as well as water treatment plant at Daboase to promote economic activities.
