Facilities at the Kumasi Airport are being upgraded at a cost of about US$300 million as efforts to raise it into international status gather momentum.
This involves refurbishment of the terminal, improving the runway, construction of hotels, restaurants, conference hall and car park.
Mrs. Doreen Owusu-Fianko, Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), said it would take 36 months to complete.
The job had been awarded to P.W. Ghanem and that the contractors have already started working on the runway.
She made this known when the newly-confirmed Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Kojo Bonsu, toured the Airport on Thursday.
The Airport has for the past 30 years not seen any major rehabilitation, a situation that had left many of the facilities in bad shape.
Mrs. Owusu–Fianko said on completion it could handle about five million passengers annually.
Mr. Bonsu said in view of the fact that Kumasi was a business hub of the country it was necessary to bring the Airport to international standards to serve the business community and the people.
He said the Kumasi Metropolitan Authority would liaise with the GACL to speed up rehabilitation works.
The visit was the first official assignment to be undertaken by the MCE, following his election.
