Friedrich Ebert Stiftung to step up efforts to support unions in Ghana

CrowdMadam Daniella Kuze, Resident Director of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Ghana, on Wednesday pledged the Foundation’s determination to step up its efforts to collaborate with labour unions in Ghana to make them more efficient.

She gave the assurance at a forum organised by the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) in collaboration with the FES and the Danish Trade Union Council for the Development Co-operation in Accra.

The purpose of the forum was to create the platform to unite all associations and unions in the informal sector to champion their cause.

Madam Kuze expressed dissatisfaction that a mere 20 per cent of operators in the formal sector paid taxes and stressed that the revenue generated at the sector could not adequately fund basic needs including social securities and infrastructure.

She called on operators at the informal sector to contribute towards socio-economic development by paying their taxes.

Mr Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of GTUC expressed the hope that the forum would create the platform for participants to contribute towards deepening the cause of unions and associations in Ghana.

Participants at the forum included members of the Ghana Actors Guild, Makola Traders Union, Ga East Traders Union, Agbogbloshie Chop Bar Association and the Musicians Association of Ghana.

FES Ghana is a non-Governmental Organisation that seeks to promote security, social democracy and economic development.
