UEW Vice Chancellor appeals to university teachers to resume work
Professor Akwasi Asabere Ameyaw, Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, has appealed to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to reconsider the strike action and resume lectures while their grievances were being resolved.
Professor Asabere-Ameyaw made the appeal at the 17 Congregation of the Distance Education of the University at Winneba on Saturday.
He said: “Let us resume lectures while solution is being found to our strike, my dear colleagues listen to me and you will never be disappointed”.
On the admission of the university, the Vice Chancellor said the facility was compelled to increase intake of fresh regular students to at least 7,500, an increase of about 50 percent.
This is as a result of two groups of West African Secondary School Certificate Examination graduates that would be entering the tertiary institutions this examination season, he said.
Professor Asabere-Ameyaw said the university had just completed the construction of three hostel facilities for the Kumasi, Mampong and Winneba campuses.
He said it had also completed the construction of two faculty buildings, one each on the Kumasi and Winneba campuses, adding that “we are also renovating a number of old structures to increase office space, accommodation for students and to increase classroom and laboratory/workshop space for academic work.
The Vice Chancellor said the university, however, needed immediate support from the Government to furnish those facilities with the relevant equipment to enable them prepare for the expected large intake of fresh students at the beginning of the 2013/2014 academic year.
A total of 11,038 students made up of 4,803 males representing 43.52 percent and 6,233 males representing 56.48 percent graduated.
Of the total number, 1,466 were awarded with Diplomas, 9,570 awarded with Bachelor of Education Degrees,
129 graduate students comprising 77 males and 52 females were awarded with post-graduate degrees while 14 were awarded with Post-Graduate Diplomas. 115 had Masters Degree and one PHD degree.
