Gomoa Dago Landing Beach Committee dissolved

FishermenThe District Chief Executive, Mr Theophilus Adu-Mensah has dissolved the Gomoa Dago Landing Beach Committee and urged the people to submit a representative for a new committee to be formed.

The dissolution of the committee was necessitated by the committee’s inability to render its financial accounts to the community.

Landing Beach Committees were formed in 2009 in communities where fishing activities were carried out, to hand over the pre-mix fuel directly to fishermen due the heavy subside made by the government in fuel.

A percentage of the profit made from the sales of the fuel was to be given to the community for development, especially in a project which benefits the fishermen.

At a meeting held at Gomoa Dago for the accounts to be rendered, which was attended by DCE, the presiding member, the chief of the town, Asafo Number I and Asafo Number 2 representatives and opinion leaders of the town it came light that the committee borrowed money from an individual who collected GHȼ 500 as his share of the profit on one allocation of fuel made to the town.

The committee chaired by the chief fisherman did not consult the chief and elders before taken decision.

The secretary of committee, Mr Mohammed Beggie, alleged that the chief fisherman Nana K.T. Arthur forged his signature at Agriculture Development Bank at Agona Swedru to withdraw money and made use of it without the knowledge of the committee members.

This allegation, the chief fisherman, denied but could not render account of money came into his custody. The committee instead of depositing the money at the bank did not do so.

On accounts of all this it was unanimous discussion that the committee be dissolved.

The fishermen allege that due misappropriation of funds the committee was unable to order for fuel for the town which was seriously affecting their fishing business.

They  appealed to DCE to form a new committee as soon as practicable to enable them get the fuel for fishing as the main fishing season draws nearer, and the DCE assured them that he will reconstitute the committee as soon as he received the representative of the fishermen.
