Ghanaian Scientist hands over €90,000 solar panel to Nyakrom SHS
Dr Sam Kwesi Essiamah, a citizen of Nyakrom who donated the solar panel, also handed over 30 computers and accessories worth €10,000 to the school.
Addressing students and authorities of the school, Dr Essiamah said the solar panel would help them to study the computer at any time now that the nation was going through energy crisis.
Dr Essiamah, who is also the President of Association of School Forestry for West Africa, said in 1996 he initiated tree planting projects in schools at Agona Nyakrom and other public places to ensure the greening of the environment.
He said after the tree planning project he decided to solicit for funds from various organizations in Germany to purchase the solar-powered facility and computers to facilitate the efforts of students in and around Agona Nyakrom to have access to the programme.
Dr Essiamah said the project became a reality through the assistance of Mr Tobias Klaus, who led the delegation to Ghana in June 2012 to install the solar powered – computer project at the school.
He said the project was the first of its kind in the country and that would bring down electricity cost to the school.
Dr Essiamah said plans were far advanced to launch an Environmental Educational Fund to support tree planting and also check environmental degradation in the Agona West Municipality.
Mr Maxi Maxell Bisi, Headmaster of the School, expressed appreciation to the donor, Dr Essiamah, for the kind gesture and pledged to maintain the project for the benefit of the students.
Mr Samuel Oppong, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) said government was determined to the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the schools.
He said the government last year distributed 500 laptops to 36 basic schools in the Agona West Municipality to enhance effective teaching of ICT.
Nana Okofo Katakyi Nyakoh Eku X, Omanhene of Nyakrom Traditional Area, thanked Dr Essiamah for his assistance and expressed the hope that it would be used for the benefit of students in the entire municipality.
