CCFC commissions classroom block for Nayugu community

The Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) has commissioned a two-unit classroom block at the cost of GH¢45,000 for the Nayugu community in the Gushiegu District to encourage school enrolment in the area.

Mrs. Gifty Akosua Baka, the Country Director of the CCFC, commissioning the project on Friday, expressed worry that despite the numerous interventions government had made in enrolling pupils; about one million children were still out of school.

She urged the community to take advantage of the availability of the school commissioned to put every child of school going age in school, saying “CCFC has been advocating that the age for pre-school or early childhood development should be scaled back to 3 years so that children will cultivate and sustain the interest of formal education at an early age”.

Mrs. Baka said CCFC placed a lot of emphasis on children’s education because of the understanding that education breaks the chain of poverty.

She added it was in conformity with their mission of creating a future of hope for children, families and communities by helping them to develop the skills and resources to overcome poverty and pursue social justice.

She said her outfit and partners had introduced a new concept into education programme known as learning through play (LTP) that promotes the greater involvement of parents in playing with their young children but at the same time teaching them what they need to know.

“The concept draws on local folklores, storytelling, music and games that adults and children can do together such that the children learn to recite poems, name objects, count and read in the process”, she said.

Mrs Baka appealed to the District Education Directorate and the District Assembly to provide the support by posting teachers to the school as a necessary resource.

Mr. Fuseini Karimu, Deputy District Coordinating for Gushiegu acknowledged the support of the CCFC to the district and promised to work with the district education directorate to ensure the community gets a JHS.

Mr. Iddrisu Mahama, Assistant Director of Education in charge of Finance and Administration, promised on behalf of the GES in the district to support the school, noting the community would be receiving 24 computers soon.
