Former Ghana President, Jerry John Rawlings is off to Caracas to pay his last respect to the Late President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez.

A statement from Mr Rawlings’ office said the ex-Ghanaian leader left Accra for Caracas on Wednesday March 13, 2013.

President Rawlings had a good relationship with Chavez and described his death as a huge blow to Africa and the rest of the developing world.

Mr Rawlings, during a recent visit to Nigeria, said he was disappointed that African countries did not fly flags at half-mast when Chavez died March 5, 2013.

President Rawlings said Chavez defended the rights of Africa and developing countries by promoting policies in the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) that supported development in less endowed countries.

It’s disgraceful that no African Governments were represented at Mr. Chavez’s funeral. Chavez is a hero to those who honor self-determination and anti-imperialism.
