Sports not ‘dead’ in Eastern Region – Regional Director

footballDirector of the Eastern Regional Sports Council, Joshua Mensah, has debunked report sports in the region is ‘dead’ insisting there is more to it than just football.

Buttering his case in an interview with GNA Sports, Mensah said ‘the fact that football is dead in the region does not mean all other sports are dead’.

He said six persons from the region were part of the national Table Tennis team (Black Loopers) at the recent African Table Tennis Championship in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire while the region scooped 13 medals during the National Unity Games held in 2011.

The Director said he was saddened with the neglect of other sporting disciplines by Government and other organizations in preference for football “which does not even bring us any medal.”

He implored “Government to at least channel just ten per cent of the financial resources spent on football into other sports to awaken them across the country.”

Mensah also called on corporate organizations to harbour interest in sponsoring other sporting disciplines, blaming the inadequate attention to the dearth of talents.

He recalled the difficulties his outfit encounter to secure funds to organize sporting events in the region, insisting, “It becomes demoralizing to start something so dear to your heart without any financial support; if there is no money and support, no matter how brilliant your ideas are, you cannot make it.”

He said Ghana could improve her performance at the Olympic Games with maximum attention for other sports in the country.
