NCA to hold forum on installations of communication towers

Telecoms mastThe first edition of a stakeholder forum on communication towers and masts (SFCT&M 2013) would be held on Thursday in Accra.

The National Communications Authority (NCA)-led initiative aims at educating the public on the deployment of communications towers and masts, their existence and implementation.

A statement issued by the NCA in Accra on Wednesday said the forum would build on the successful development of guidelines for the regulation of towers and masts and set rules for their full compliance and enforcement.

“The idea of the forum is to encourage cross-fertilization of ideas between the Government, regulators and the private sector players to gain critical input and analyse specific considerations in achieving the policy goal of sustainable competitive communications development.”

The statement said in line with the theme, “Guidelines for Communication Development in Ghana,” the forum would once again reassure Ghanaians and subscribers of the NCA’s proactiveness in regulating the communications industry firmly.

The statement said following the setting up of an inter-ministerial committee comprising the Ministries of Communications, Environment, Science and Technology, and Local Government, a technical committee spearheaded by the NCA was formed to collaborate in the development, adoption and management of the guidelines put in place to regulate the construction and installation of masts and towers.

Membership of the committee was drawn from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC).

Others are from the Town and Country Planning Department, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, infrastructure development companies and the telecommunications industry.

The statement said presentations would be made by representatives of the organisations on the environmental impact and the perceived effects of radiation emissions of these towers and masts.

It said a forum to discuss the challenges encountered during the implementation of the guidelines and the way forward would precede the main forum.

The forum would be addressed by the Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi, Board Chairman of the NCA.

I writing to inform you that calls from abroad are still being re-directed. I received calls from my sister in the US and the number that registered on my phone was a 023 number. My wife also received a call from South Africa and it was an other 023 number.
I hope you will act to get those involved.
