France pledges more support to UCC

Mr Frederick Clavier, French Ambassador to Ghana, on Monday pledged more support from the French Government to the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Mr Clavier described UCC as one of the best universities in Ghana and West Africa, explaining that this was why the French Government has chosen it as one of the best pillars through which to develop its relations with Ghana.

The ambassador said this when he and Mr Paulo Pais, a Director at the French Embassy, interacted with the vice-chancellor, deans, directors and heads of faculties and departments at the UCC as part of his working visit to the university.

He said the French Embassy previously dealt with only the French Department of the UCC but was now looking forward to supporting other faculties such as the PhD Mathematics School, the Medical School and the Faculty of Arts.

Mr Clavier said the embassy was looking forward to developing deeper partnerships and contacts and also promoting research in schools in Ghana and France.

Some of the deans requested for, among other things, a “French Laboratory” where students could have first-hand knowledge of the language as well as cultural exchanges and collaborations with universities in France.

They were also hopeful that research centres would be supported to conduct research on topics such as Climate Change, Peace Studies and Conflicts, which are very crucial to Ghana and Africa at large.
Medical students should also be given the opportunity to have attachments in French public hospitals.

The ambassador promised to treat these requests and others with the urgent attention they need.

Professor Domwini Kuupole, Vice Chancellor of UCC, expressed gratitude to the French Ambassador for the visit and the support the school had been enjoying over the years from the French Government, hoping for more of such support.

He urged the deans and faculty heads to put together proposals which would be presented to the embassy.
