Educationist calls for national policy guide for inclusive education

Dr Peter Obeng-Asamoa, Director of the Ghana Blind Union (GBU), has called for a national policy to guide the implementation of the inclusive education system in the country.

Inclusive education is the system under which quality education is provided for all children regardless of their physical, intellectual, social, emotional or linguistic challenges.

He said in spite of the apparent shortfalls and hesitations that occur in its implementation, inclusive education presents the most realistic and effective option for the total development of this nation.

Dr Obeng-Asamoah was speaking at the 56th Annual Speech and Prize Giving Day of the Okuapemman School at Akropong-Akuapem at the week-end.

He suggested that children with disability, street children and working children from remote areas and those from ethnic or cultural minority groups could be made to learn together with the non-disabled children in the same facilities in the same environment.

He said this would reduce cost since all the children would share the same facilities and the non-disabled children would learn to appreciate the abilities of the physically challenged and help reduce misconceptions about people with disabilities.

Dr Obeng-Asamoa called for a concerted effort to enable blind and partially sighted persons to master mathematics, ICT and the sciences in addition to the Braille.
