National service personnel elect new national officers

At their annual congress held in Kumasi, Mr Wilberforce Tabbi Awotwe, has been elected as the new President of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA).

Mr Awotwe and other executives elected to serve for a year include James Twum, General Secretary, Jarvis Kwame Baidoo, Organizing Secretary and Cephas Ofoe Ocquaye, Financial Secretary.

Mr Vincent Senam Kuagbenu, Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), speaking at the congress, called on the district assemblies and other stakeholders to do more to assist provide decent accommodation for national personnel who accept to serve in deprived and difficult-to-reach communities.

This could significantly assist to encourage and attract many of them to such areas, he said, adding that the nation has been making huge savings through the deployment of service personnel to critical sectors of the economy.

He spoke of plans to ensure that all the personnel were registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to enable them enjoy free health care.

Mr Kwesi Quainoo, the Ashanti Regional Director, said the NSS has made tremendous contribution to the nation’s development.

It has additionally helped to train and inculcate in the youth the values of discipline, hard work, tolerance and diligence.

Mr Oscar Jonas Tei, immediate past NASPA President, appealed to government to give every push to the NSS agricultural venture, to grow the enthusiasm of the youth in farming.

Mr Awotwe said they were grateful to the delegates for the trust and pledged they would not disappoint.

The congress, which brought together 50 delegates from across the country, was held under the theme “Fostering national unity for better socio-economic development: The role of the national service personnel”.
