BibleThe Bible Society of Ghana (BSG) in conjunction with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has launched this year’s National Bible Week celebration at the St Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Kumasi.

Speaking on the theme: “The Bible and National Cohesion”, Most Rev Gabriel J. Anokye, Archbishop of Kumasi and Apostolic Administrator of Obuasi, said the topic for the celebration was more appropriate, coming at the heels of the 2012 general elections in Ghana.

Referring to the aftermath of the general elections, Archbishop Anokye admonished Ghanaians not to give up or give in to divisive tendencies, because “we all belong to the same team of the spirit of unity.”

“When the faith journey becomes tough and rough, we must remain rigorous and vigorous,” he urged, adding that the word of God is living, active, food for the soul and a pure and lasting fount of spiritual life.

Archbishop Anokye called on Ghanaians to buy, investigate, believe, live and enjoy eternal life from the Bible – which is the word of God, the Creator of the universe.

Rev Erasmus Odonkor, General Secretary of the BSG, in an address read for him by Mrs Marilyn Owusu, the Northern Sector Chairperson of the BSG, advised Ghanaians to sustain the peace and unity the country is enjoying.

Rev Odonkor said the Bible has set clear standards for family, community and national cohesion and it was important for people to live by them in order to enjoy all the blessings that God has for them and the nation.

He said national cohesion would become a reality when Ghanaians focus on national identity than on partisan and ethnic identity.

“Certainly, we shall not have a Ghana to talk about if we fail to build a cohesive society.  Ghana will be Ghana, only if every Ghanaian feels a sense of belonging to the nation,” he said.

The ceremony was chaired by Most Rev Dr Yinkah Sarfo, Anglican Archbishop (elect) of Administrative Province of Ghana and Bishop of Kumasi.
