kaneshie_marketOne key challenge facing many markets in Ghana is the improper disposal of refuse, particularly solid waste disposal, and there have been calls urgent action to solve the problem.

Major markets like the market circle in Takoradi and the Essaman market in the Central Region are two major markets battling sanitation problems.

Mr. James Cobbinah, Chairman of the Essaman Market Association said in a statement after a meeting with the leadership of the two markets said stench emanating from the two markets were unbearable.

The Association appealed to the Ministry of Environment, Science & Technology, the Ghana Health Services (GHS) the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as the Assembly to ensure the implementation of sanitation by-laws and policies to protect traders and buyers.

He said the association with support from the Business Advocacy Challenge Fund would continue to advocate and train members to push for a policy framework for the discontinuation of dumping of waste near the market areas.
